The society was suggested by Trey Shehan on November 4, 2003 on Usenet, in the newsgroup rec.heraldry.  It stemmed out of a discussion regarding the establishment of official heraldry bodies for the respective states in the United States, and was formally proposed by Trey Shehan on November 5th, in the same newsgroup.

The American Heraldry Society hopes to further the causes of heraldry in the United States through education, and through the establishment of official registering bodies in each state.  We also will write a curriculum for the certification of private heralds, and maintain a free registry of arms of all those who are interested.
